This morning we take a tour of the cloister at Ai Frati. Luigi explains to us the history of the monastery, which was started by a Franciscan monk called Ercolano in the 14th century. The monk was a “colleague” of St. Francis and came to the area during the time of the plague.
The people of the town gave Ercolano the land after he had prayed for them to survive the plague and his prayers were successful. However, the land had no water, so the Ercolano created an irrigation system and cistern that routed water to a well from an adjacent stream.
